It is on Monday, June 5 at 7 p.m. (Paris time) that Apple will unveil the future of its operating systems, but also its projects, in particular its long-awaited augmented reality headset.

This is the tech event of this beginning of June, without a doubt. Next Monday, June 5, Apple will kick off its WWDC 2023, a conference which takes place over several days in California and which will allow iOS or macOS developers to discover the latest innovations prepared in the greatest secrecy by the brand. .

A WWDC cannot be held without an introductory keynote, and this year, as in previous years, the various brand managers will follow one another to unveil the new software products that will be released during the year.

In all likelihood, this WWDC 2023 should be a particularly rich edition with expected announcements, but also the presentation of a new platform that could mark the future of Apple for the next few years.

iOS 17 is preparing to land on iPhones

WWDC is the time of year when Apple reveals the next versions of its operating systems to the world, and this edition will be no exception. Better still, we have already heard some indiscretions about the novelties brought by the brand to its various platforms.

The iPhone now represents 50% of the manufacturer’s total turnover, and it is almost certain that iOS 17 will be the star of this long presentation session. According to the always well-informed Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, we should not expect new features as striking as the new lock screen seen with iOS 16. The update will be more discreet and should bring long-awaited features as well as some interface improvements. iOS 17 could also focus on the performance and optimization component. In addition, we can expect the system to integrate the first elements allowing sideloading, ie the possibility of downloading applications outside the App Store. Apple has no choice if it wants to comply with the European Digital Markets Regulation (DMA) which will come into force in 2024.

macOS, watchOS: new versions are coming soon to your devices

Apple will also present iPadOS 17, its system adapted to tablets. According to some rumors, to be taken with tweezers, the new OS would take care of improving audio and video outputs thanks to Stage Manager, multitasking introduced last year, but also support for external webcams.

Same story for macOS 14, which should inherit a new name inspired by major places in California. No information has filtered about it, and if we follow the developments made to the previous system, macOS Ventura, the operating system should not rush users both in terms of design and functionality.

watchOS 10 should mark the occasion with a redesigned interface. Apple would prepare a new presentation based on widgets and which could replace the presentation of applications in the form of a grid, or add to it. Third-party applications are dwindling, proof recently with the scheduled disappearance of the Messenger application, and the manufacturer would take note of this by highlighting its own services. This new design would be the first major overhaul of the Apple Watch since its launch in 2015.

Apple’s VR headset should (finally) be presented

She has been an Arlesian for several years, and the wait should finally come to an end. Apple could, unless there is a big surprise, unveil with great fanfare its mixed reality headset, a project that has been in development for 7 years already in the group’s laboratories. The device should integrate two OLED screens, including an exterior for communication with the exterior, and integrate the M2 processor.

In addition to the AR / VR headset, which could be priced around $3,000, Apple would focus on xrOS, the device’s operating system. The objective for the brand is to convince both users, by presenting in detail the different uses imagined to convince them to pay such a sum, but also the developers present on site or participating in the event remotely. The firm would like to make them want to design software before the launch of the helmet, which could take place before the end of 2023.

The stakes are therefore more than important for Apple, which has no room for error. The manufacturer must find a growth driver and show its ability to innovate without rest ad nauseam on its existing product lines.

A new 15-inch MacBook Air?

Apple could finally present a new MacBook Air with, for the first time in its history, a 15-inch screen. For its part, the design should not evolve, and this MacBook Air should sport the same lines as the 13-inch model released in the summer of 2022.

As far as the processor is concerned, this new laptop should still integrate an Apple M2, and the next generation M3 would wait until the end of this year at best to show the end of its transistors.
