Wynonna Earp: The quickest serial hero since vampire hunter Buffy

With Wynonna Earp, a serial heroine is in the starting blocks who does not need to hide from the demon hunter Buffy Summers.

It's been 17 years since Sarah Michelle Gellar (43) alias demon hunter Buffy was able to seal the Hellmouth in Sunnydale forever. With the grand finale of "Buffy – The Vampire Slayer" ended in 2003 and after seven seasons not only the steady stream of monsters out of the gate to hell.

The weekly replenishment of new episodes with the verbally and literally quick-witted title hero dried up, who was so aptly able to combine humor, tragedy, mystery and horror. But after all these years there is finally a worthy successor who will soon be coming to Germany with juicy advance praise from the USA and Canada: Wynonna Earp. The series of the same name combines the virtues of the vampire hunter with casual, cool neo-westerns. The pay-TV broadcaster SYFY will be showing all four seasons of the "Wynonna Earp" series exclusively on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:15 pm from November 11th. There are three episodes in a row to watch.

Welcome to purgatory: that's what "Wynonna Earp" is about

"Wynonna Earp" is based on the IDW comics of the same name by Beau Smith. At the beginning of the four-season series, the title heroine (Melanie Scrofano, 38) ends up in the aptly titled US nest Purgatory, in English purgatory. As her sonorous name suggests, Wynonna is anything but an ordinary woman. She is the great-great-granddaughter of famous gunslinger Wyatt Earp and has returned to her old homeland to face a family curse.

All the Western henchmen who their ancestors hunted down decades ago have returned to the present as so-called "Revenants". Only Wynonna is able to put them back where they belong – to hell. Thanks to the "Peacemaker", that supernatural revolver that Wyatt Earp wielded. However, it does not have to face the superiority of villains alone. She is supported by Sister Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley, 30), the police officer Nicole Haught (Katherine Barrell, 30) and the immortal Doc Holliday (Tim Rozon, 44).

Strong but not hypothermic

It is obvious that the series "Wynonna Earp" is hailed as the legitimate successor to "Buffy". A title heroine who, against her will, fulfills the destiny as the chosen one and has to face supernatural dangers – and who is also given an immortal "love interest" …? The Canadian showrunner Emily Andras makes no secret of the fact that the cult series by Joss Whedon (56) served as a template.

"The one thing that I want to take on from 'Buffy' more than anything is that Wynonna is also a woman in the modern world who makes her own way," Andras told US site "The Hollywood Reporter"

Indeed, like "Buffy", "Wynonna Earp" avoids the fatal mistake of confusing strength with cold feeling. The title heroine usually first fires forbidden cool online liners and only then fires her "peacemaker", but she is also not afraid to show feelings. Above all in her close relationship with sister Waverly this becomes abundantly clear and ensures authentic television despite the mystery plot with a hint of humor.

Celebrated for inclusion

"Wynonna Earp" is full of lovable, skillfully crafted and therefore profound characters – on both sides of the honesty scale. The fact that the series was able to develop a solid and extremely loyal fan base is also due to the fact that it does not take up the topic of same-sex love in a pretentious or exploitative way. A fact that should actually be taken for granted in the 21st century – but unfortunately it still isn't.

If you want to see Wynonna Earp's campaign against the "Revenants" and outdated role clichés, you can incorporate the first three seasons on SYFY from November 11th. After a short winter break, the brand new fourth season will be shown from January 2021. As soon as the episodes have been broadcast, the trip to Purgatory, which is well worth seeing, is always available on call.
