The announcement was welcomed like a gift from heaven by some X users (ex-Twitter). The platform, led by Elon Musk, now offers to pay paid accounts provided they generate enough views and interactions. A boon for the manager of the Alertes Infos account, with more than 322,000 subscribers and known for relaying the news by relying on several media. The latter will receive the tidy sum of 6,850 euros for all of his activity between February and July 2023. The first “payslips” sent by the network have been arriving gradually since Tuesday.

To claim it, you must of course subscribe to a Twitter Blue subscription, X’s paid formula, for 11 euros per month, but also have at least 500 subscribers and generate at least 15 million views, all tweets combined, at the course of the last three months. Once all these conditions are met, a content creator on X can be financially rewarded by the platform, like Youtubers or Tiktokers.

“I intend to take the certification at the start of the school year”

Goumz – that’s his nickname – debrief on X football news as well as many matches for which he offers a condensed analysis in 2 minutes and 20 seconds after the final whistle. With more than 3,400 subscribers on the platform and a growing community, he should soon take the plunge. “I plan to take certification at the start of the school year. It’s an opportunity because until now only content creators on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram could be paid. However, I’m not really on these networks except TikTok where I I just got started. While Twitter, I’ve been on it for a long time. So I find the concept interesting,” he admits.

His decision, “90% taken”, is also motivated by the new features offered by Twitter Blue, independently of the financial aspect. Because on this point, many questions remain unanswered. On its assistance center, X provides the procedure to follow to benefit from the famous remuneration, provided that the criteria mentioned above are met. You will, for example, have to register on the Stripe online payment system where the money will be paid to you.

“Crown Investment”

But very quickly, the vagueness appears. X indicates that users will “receive payments at a regular cadence”, without further details. No indication either as to a possible financial scale that could be applied depending on the number of views on a tweet. Unless the remuneration is calculated via an algorithm combining several criteria, as is the case on TikTok where many influencers denounce, moreover, the opacity of the system.

It is for all of these reasons that Alexandre Lazar, journalist for the magazine SoFoot and founder of the media “Romanian football“, on X, still weighs the pros and cons. “Twitter Blue is a hypothesis, yes. Whereas at first glance, I refused to accept this idea. In particular because today, certification no longer has any value. But I haven’t researched it enough yet. Some accounts, which nevertheless have thousands of subscribers, ended up with 0 euros. So I don’t really know how it works,” he admits.

Nevertheless, his account, intended for relaying information on football news in Romania, has more than 6,400 subscribers and a possible financial contribution would come “to crown the investment and the time that it requires”, adds the person concerned. “We impose a certain rigor on ourselves and for what it represents, I think it would be a fair return,” he concludes.

“I saw that it was a little more complicated than that”

Same story for Sacha, also a journalist and offering content identical to that of Alexandre Lazar, but dedicated this time to Serbian football. The account he runs, dubbed “Fudbalski Hram“, has just over 5,000 followers. The idea of receiving compensation immediately aroused his interest, but the enthusiasm has cooled somewhat in view of the gray areas that persist. “I don’t know if it is a good or a bad plan. I poked around a bit and saw that it was a bit more complicated than that. Having particularly seen, liked and retweeted tweets is not always enough to obtain financial results. This does not necessarily call into question my initial wish but let’s say that it tempers it”, he indicates.

Through this initiative, Elon Musk intends to offer new credibility to the Twitter Blue service, shunned by users since its launch. And thus restore color to the entire platform, in the grip of significant financial difficulties.
