Xafari and Xyber: Segway surprises with powerful e-bikes

E BIKE

Segway is taking the CES in Las Vegas as an opportunity and introducing two new e-bikes. The futuristic design with an off-road reference makes the electric two-wheelers stand out from the crowd.

Should this still be an e-bike? According to Segway, yes, at least in the USA. (Source: Segway)

If those interested in e-bikes can be divided into two categories – purists and futurists – then Segway is clearly targeting the latter target group with these two innovations. Because the naming alone seems to be out of this world. The electric two-wheelers are called “Xafari” and “Xyber”.

The two CES premieres are supposed to be approved as e-bikes in the USA, but unfortunately they are too powerful in this form to be considered pedelecs for the German market. In some versions, the bikes do not have pedals and would have to be registered as e-mopeds in this country.

However, it is quite possible that Segway will improve on this, as not all of the technical data are known yet. What is certain is that both models are equipped with smartphone coupling and an alarm system and offer convenience features. For example, the light should turn on automatically when you approach.

The slightly slimmer, full-suspension model called Xafari has a huge 913 watt hour (Wh), removable battery. Information about the range is still pending, but the capacity alone is impressive. The hub motor installed in the rear wheel with an output of 750 watts has a torque of 80 Newton meters. Segway has not yet announced the maximum speed up to which the Xafari supports the motor.

The Xyber model almost goes in the direction of an electric motorcycle, or more precisely in the direction of a light electric enduro. An even more powerful electric motor with a torque of 175 Newton meters is used here. If you’re wondering why there’s so much air space in the frame in the pictures: If necessary, you can expand the standard 1,440 watt-hour battery with an identical battery. The total battery capacity is then an impressive 2,880 watt hours!

Price and availability

Important key data for the two innovations are still pending. As part of the CES, Segway has not yet said a word about price and availability. You can read more news from the largest electronics trade fair in Las Vegas here. We report on the latest e-bike innovations for you here.
