Xavier Niel attacks Orange, the dismantling is too slow

The 2030 horizon announced by Orange for the end of the ADSL copper network does not suit Xavier Niel. During the Economic Affairs Committee of the Senate on March 22, the billionaire estimated that it is possible to considerably accelerate the process. For that, nothing simpler: it is enough to force the users to follow the movement.

In 7 years, the copper ADSL network will no longer be. Orange, manager of this said network, confirmed the dismantling of the latter last year, thus leaving time to make the transition without a hitch in areas where fiber is not yet available. With several thousand kilometers of cables to be removed from circulation, this deadline does not seem so far away.

This is, however, not the opinion of Xavier Niel. This Wednesday, March 22, facing the Economic Affairs Committee of the Senate, the boss of Free has indeed affirmed that Orange has planned “overly extended schedule” for the project, as well as “conditions envisaged for the cessation of copper which are not satisfactorys”. And the latter thinks he already knows the solution to this thorny problem.

Xavier Niel knows how to speed up the dismantling of the ADSL copper network

According to Xavier Niel, everything depends on areas where fiber is not yet the norm. In these underserved areas, where many older people live, users would have “fear of change” according to the billionaire, “because for them it works well”. The whole point of the situation would therefore be to convince those he calls “the irreducible”.

“Collectively, we must have a goal, which is to turn off this copper network as quickly as possible, already because it will reduce the environmental impact; and that it will optimize the investment”, continues Xavier Niel. Therefore, the boss recommends going straight to the point, by directly imposing the fiber in the areas concerned. “The only times it works is when you say “tomorrow, there will be no more copper, we will have to switch to fiber optics””he concludes
