Xbox beats PS5: Microsoft has the edge in next-gen features

Sony took its time with the VRR update for the PS5. Now the feature has finally landed on the console, but in direct comparison, the Xbox Series X offers significantly better performance than the PlayStation 5 in this regard.

With a recent update, Sony has finally made VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) available on the PS5. While Fans have long requested the feature, there is currently still a noticeable lack of implementation. In the comparison test with the Xbox Series X, the PS5 cannot yet keep up in terms of VRR.

PS5: VRR feature still needs improvement

Digital Foundry put the PS5’s new VRR feature through its paces. The function should be through the Optimizing the frame rate for a better picture and prevent jerks and cracks (tearing). It should also reduce the input lag. However, the portal comes to the conclusion in the test that VRR is not optimally implemented on the PlayStation 5.

The main criticism for the VRR feature on the PS5 is that it only works in a limited frame rate range. Should the refresh rate drops below 48 FPS, the function fails. Games with specific patches like Ratchet & Clank run smoothly, but unpatched games like Elden Ring still suffer from some problems because of this, while the feature does not support PS4 games either.

Xbox: VRR is implemented better

Compared to the Xbox Series X, the VRR feature on the PS5 is currently performing noticeably worse. The function works in 120 Hz mode on the Microsoft console without a limited refresh range. In 60 Hz mode, however, there is also a limit on the Xbox: This is 40 FPS.
