A possible revival of Blizzard’s cult RTS
This isn’t the first time Phil Spencer has expressed excitement about the possibility of reviving old Activision Blizzard titles under the Microsoft umbrella. In a recent interview with wired, he once again mentioned his interest in certain RTS such as StarCraft or Warcraft.
“The first thing I would say is that I’m not allowed to make decisions about what happens at home. Blizzard or Activision or King“, he explained. “So this is all just a discussion […]”
“[…] Not just StarCraft, but also WarCraft, when you think about the legacy of RTS games [ndlr : Real time strategy] we’re talking about here, especially those from Blizzard. And I don’t have any concrete projects today because I can’t really go there and work with the teams. […] But StarCraft was a watershed moment in gaming, right? Whether in terms of esports, console RTS or storytelling.”
He added that he was “looking forward” to working with the teams at Activision, Blizzard and King “to talk about the back catalog [ndlr : une liste de toutes les œuvres de la compagnie] and opportunities”.
Activision CEO Bobby Kotickhad also expressed a desire to revive classic franchises on Xbox.
An acquisition still not validated
Regarding the “series” around the takeover of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft, the European Commission recently declared that it wanted to launch further investigation on the effects that it could have on the market.
Bobby Kotick, however, is still confident about the validation of the acquisition: “We have worked closely with Microsoft to quickly answer questions from regulators in other countries and give them concrete information to help them in their investigations.
