The redemption of Bethesda Softworks by Microsoft has already allowed a good part of the publisher’s catalog to be added to the Xbox Game Pass, including some very old titles. It would not be surprising if the manufacturer did the same for the productions ofActivision Blizzardbut while the takeover is still not finalized, nothing concrete has yet been done.
To reassure players or competition regulatory authorities who are still evaluating this acquisition, which must be finalized before June 30, 2023, Phil Spencer has just published an interesting post on the site of Microsoft. The branch manager Xbox y explains that the intention behind this takeover is above all to bring the licenses ofActivision Blizzard to an even wider audience, via the Game Passthe Xbox Cloud Gaming and still cross-platform releases. We intend to make Activision Blizzard’s much-loved library of games – including Overwatch, Diablo, and Call of Duty – available in Game Pass and grow those gaming communities. By delivering even more value to gamers, we hope to continue to grow Game Pass, extending its appeal to mobile phones and any connected device.
Bringing more games to mobile platforms, however, requires new capabilities. The expertise that Activision Blizzard teams bring to developing games for mobile platforms will help us understand how to create games that engage gamers around the world. Additionally, we hope gamers will be eager to play traditional Activision Blizzard console games on other platforms through our cloud game streaming technology. It promises to open up mobile gaming, creating new distribution opportunities for game developers outside of mobile app stores while delivering engaging and immersive experiences for gamers using the power of the cloud. And we can extend the gaming fun to devices people already own, including smart TVs and laptops.
In doing so, we will pursue a principled path. We’ve heard that this deal could drive franchises like Call of Duty away from where people are currently playing them. That’s why, as we’ve said before, we’re committed to making the same version of Call of Duty available on PlayStation the same day the game launches elsewhere. We will continue to allow people to play with each other across all platforms and devices. We know gamers benefit from this approach because we’ve done it with Minecraft, which continues to be available on multiple platforms and has expanded to even more since Mojang joined Microsoft in 2014. As we expand our showcase games on new devices and platforms, we will ensure that we do so in a way that protects developers’ ability to choose how to distribute their games.
You will have understood it, while waiting for the purchase ofActivision Blizzard is not fully endorsed, some gray areas remain, but everything suggests that players Xbox will fully and quickly take advantage of it when the time comes.
