XGIMI Magic Lamp: an Android Led projector in a ceiling light!

3

You had to think about it, XGIMI did it. The Chinese manufacturer has integrated a short-throw LED projector into a ceiling light to make it disappear completely into the decor. When switched off, the video projector is simply an LED lamp.

The XGIMI Magic Lamp is a short-throw Led projector displaying a Full HD definition of 1920 x 1080 px thanks to Texas Instruments DLP technology. The manufacturer announces a brightness of 900 lumens, which should place it between the XGMI Z6 Polar and the XGIMI H2 Global that we tested, but far behind the Horizon Pro which, with its 4K Ultra HD definition, is higher in range. This brightness allows use in a dimly lit room, but not in broad daylight. The XGIMI Magic Lamp’s short throw allows it to project a 100 inch diagonal (254 cm) image from a distance of only 1.5 m (0.71:1 ratio). This model is equipped with a vertical lens-shift which makes it possible to modify the position of the image on ±1 meter in height. The focal length is fixed and the correction of the image size will be done in software.

A Led ceiling light and a Harman Kardon speaker

A perfectly integrated projector.

A perfectly integrated projector.

The XGIMI Magic Lamp projector is designed to replace a ceiling lamp. The built-in light has 176 diodes (leds) with, we are told, intelligent adjustment. It is assumed that the temperature of the lighting can be varied or even that it will automatically adapt to the ambient conditions. The Magic Lamp also features two 8W Harmon Kardon speakers that can be used alone via Bluetooth or with video. The projector is Dolby Audio and DTS certified. XGIMI also mentions a smart function for the speaker, without further details. For example, we do not know if it will be compatible with voice assistants (Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, etc.).

Another interesting point, it will be possible to connect HDMI devices via a wireless system sold as an option (120 €). For the rest, it embeds Android TV with wifi to access the content of the various streaming applications. It will also be possible to stream content from your smartphone via AirPlay 2 or Chromecast. The idea is of course not to connect anything to the video projector, except the power supply of the ceiling light.

Available in China for around 1200 €

The XGIMI Magic Lamp is currently sold in a limited edition of only 100 copies only in China for 7999 yuan, or around 1200 €, an attractive price for this all-in-one product. XGIMI plans to market it in the rest of the world thereafter. We still have a practical question: has XGIMI planned to decouple the use of the lamp and the video projector so as to be able to turn on the ceiling light from a switch, without impacting the operation of the video projector? If not, you will probably have to turn on the light using the projector’s remote control.
