(Reuters) – Chinese and Russian Presidents Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin will attend the G20 summit scheduled for Bali in November, Indonesian President Joko Widodo told Bloomberg on Thursday, saying the Kremlin chief briefed him directly of his presence.

No comment was immediately obtained from the services of the Indonesian presidency.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

This declaration comes at a time when the West is pressuring Indonesia to withdraw its invitation to Vladimir Putin because of the offensive launched by Russia in Ukraine.

Joko Widodo seeks to fill the role of mediator between Moscow and Kyiv. He has visited both Russia and Ukraine since the start of the war, highlighting this week that the two countries have in his view accepted Indonesia as a “bridge of peace”.

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky has also been invited to participate in the summit, for which US President Joe Biden is notably expected.
