Xiaomi will be followed by an improved version of the Xiaomi 12 in the summer. The Xiaomi 12S series consists of three models: the Xiaomi 12S, the 12S Pro and the 12S Ultra. Here’s how the three models differ:

design and processing

In this point, two of the three devices in the 12S series are very similar. The 12S and the 12S Pro shine in the design we are already familiar with from the Xiaomi 12 with a small camera hole in the front center and a larger camera bar on the back left. The monochrome back is only interrupted by a simple Xiaomi lettering on the left side.

The 12S Ultra is completely different: the exorbitantly large, round camera cut-out dominates almost half of the back and is reminiscent of a one-eyed minion. The rest of the back is made of artificial leather and is therefore much easier to grip than the glass back of the 12S (Pro).

Processor, memory and battery

When it comes to the processor, Xiaomi does not compromise on any of the three devices and relies on the best of the best: a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is installed in all three models. This is the fastest and most powerful chip that can currently be installed in an Android smartphone. All three devices are available with either 8 or 12 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of internal storage.

A 4,500 milliampere hour (mAh) lithium-ion cell is used as the battery in the basic model of the 12S series. The 12S Pro has 4,600 mAh, and the 12S Ultra has 4,860 mAh. It’s unfortunate that none of the three models comes close to the magical 5,000 milliampere hours. The battery life should still be good. The batteries of the 12S and 12S Ultra are charged with 67 watts, with the 12S Pro it is 120 watts.

screen

Because the sizes of the three devices are different, the display resolution is also different. Xiaomi used a 6.3-inch OLED display with 2,400 x 1,080 pixels for the 12S, while the two more expensive models have 3,200 x 1,440 pixels and 6.7 inches. Of course, all three devices support higher refresh rates of up to 120 Hertz.

camera

With the 12S Ultra in particular, the focus is of course on the camera. A 1-inch sensor from Sony (namely the IMX989) is installed here, which has a resolution of 50 megapixels and also functions as a wide angle. Next to it is the Sony IMX586 with an edge length of 0.5 inches and 48 megapixels – once as an ultra wide angle and once as a periscope zoom. On the front is a front camera with 32 megapixels.

Xiaomi 12S: camera samples

According to Xiaomi, these pictures were taken with the Leica camera of the Xiaomi 12S.

The situation is somewhat different for the other two devices: the 12S uses the 50-megapixel Sony IMX707 sensor as the wide-angle lens, alongside an ultra-wide-angle lens with 13 megapixels and a macro lens with 5 megapixels. The Pro model comes with the IMX707 in triplicate. It should be mentioned that Xiaomi’s new partnership with Leica was probably responsible for the development of the cameras.

Other differences

The Xiaomi 12S is the most compact model in the series with dimensions of 153 x 70 x 8.2 millimeters. At the same time, it only weighs 179 grams. The 12S Pro and 12S Ultra are not only larger at 164 x 75 x 8.2 millimeters and 163.2 x 75 x 9.1 millimeters, but also weigh significantly more at 205 and 225 grams respectively on the scales.

As a special feature, the 12S Ultra also has IP68 certification. This water protection is missing in the other two models.

network world means

The 12S and 12S Pro differ only slightly from the devices of the Xiaomi 12 series. The 12S Ultra, on the other hand, has clearer differences. If you want the best of the best, especially when it comes to cameras, you won’t go wrong with this smartphone.

You have to note that the three devices are only available for the Chinese market so far. They will probably not appear officially in Germany either.
