Xiaomi 12S: a one-inch photo sensor for the Ultra version

After revealing the announcement date, Xiaomi continues to teaser its next line of high-end smartphones, the 12S. We learn today that the Ultra version of the range will be equipped with a one-inch sensor, the Sony IMX989.

Xiaomi has officially announced that its next smartphones will be unveiled on July 4. And to keep the expectation and excitement at their peak, the firm continues its teasing with new information — this time it concerns photography.

Indeed, the Ultra version of the 12S will introduce a brand new sensor from Sony, the IMX989. A somewhat special sensor since it measures one inch, as Xiaomi indicates. But it could be that the reality is quite different and that this sensor is actually a “one-inch type” model, like what we can find in the Sony Xperia Pro-I. This means that the sensor will not really adopt the 1 “format and will be slightly truncated so as not to affect the thickness of the smartphone. A strategy which had also been adopted by Sharp in Asia with the Aquos R6 and Aquos R7.

But as GSM Arena points out, it’s possible Xiaomi will go the other way, and offer a one-inch sensor – something that hasn’t happened since the Panasonic Lumix DMC-CM1, which dates back to 2014. Ultra of the Mi 11 was already thick and heavy, and it is therefore not impossible that the Chinese firm decides to proceed in the same way, integrating the best in its smartphone.

The technical sheet of the 12S is clarified

In addition to information related to its photo sensor, Xiaomi has revealed the beginning of a technical sheet for its entry model, the 12S. The smartphone will benefit from a 6.28-inch AMOLED panel, with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The company is therefore renewing the idea of a “small” phone to fill a market that is sorely lacking. Photo level, the main module will be based on the Sony IMX707 50 megapixel sensor, coupled with an ultra wide-angle module of 13 megapixels and another of 5 megapixels. At the front, the smartphone will carry a 32 megapixel module. A technical sheet similar to the Xiaomi 12 released at the start of the year, the only difference for the moment residing in the processor, since this Xiaomi 12S will ship the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. The processing offered by Leica should in theory offer completely different results .

A reservation page has already been opened on the Chinese site JD.com. 200,000 models have been reserved for the moment, a sign of strong expectation from the Asian public.
