  • With Xiaomi cell phones, setting up the smartphone is not done by transferring your data.
  • You should also disable advertising and the MIUI daemon.
  • It is also recommended to ignite the update turbo.

The Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi is also enjoying increasing popularity in Germany and many of you may have already switched to a new cell phone from the provider.

This is relatively easy thanks to the Xiaomi software Mi Mover. But after the data transfer, the setup of the Xiaomi cell phone is not yet complete. You should definitely change the following settings – regardless of whether your cell phone is a Xiaomo, Redmi or Poco model:

  • Delete wallpaper carousel: Xiaomi advertises its wallpaper carousel very aggressively. If that bothers you, you can choose to remove the background image carousel completely from your cell phone.
  • Restore old control center: Breaking with an Android tradition on newer devices, Xiaomi separates quick settings from notifications. This is how you restore the old control center on your Xiaomi phone.
  • Remove bloatware: You will usually find a large number of pre-installed third-party apps on Xiaomi cell phones, which are often not that easy to uninstall. This so-called bloatware burdens your mobile phone memory. We will therefore show you how you can uninstall bloatware on Android phones.
  • Prevent data collection: Mobile phone manufacturers like to collect anonymous data about your usage behavior. These are then used to improve the user interface. At Xiaomi, the “MIUI Daemon” app is responsible for this. We show you how to disable the MIUI Daemon.
  • Ignite update turbo: Xiaomi regularly releases updates for its phones. If you always want to get the latest features first, you should “ignite the update turbo”. This is how you secure MIUI updates much faster.
  • Turn off ads: Xiaomi’s user interface shows advertisements in many places. That can be annoying. We will therefore show you in a separate tutorial how you can disable advertising on Xiaomi cell phones.
  • Speed up device: Is your old Xiaomi phone no longer running smoothly? Then switching off the system animations can help.

The following settings are only relevant for specific Xiaomi products.

There are also some settings that not only affect Xiaomi phones, but all Android phones, which are worth looking at at least once:

  • Google Maps – Location History: If the location history function is activated on your Android cell phone, Google Maps creates a movement profile of you. So you can always see in the app when you were where and how long you stayed there. If you don’t want this, you can deactivate the location history in Google Maps and delete your activity data on Google.
  • Enable cell broadcast: From 2023, disaster warnings will also be sent via cell broadcast in Germany. So make sure your cell phone is ready to receive. In the linked instructions, we will tell you how you can activate cell broadcast on your smartphone.
  • Disable installation from unknown sources: You can install apps on Android devices not only via Google Play, but also from other sources. However, for security reasons, it is advisable to disable sideloading of apps.

Our checklist for setting up a new smartphone tells you what else needs to be taken into account when setting up a new cell phone.
