Used since 2010 at Xiaomi, notably on the group’s smartphones, the MIUI interface could soon bow out in favor of MiOS. Simple rebranding or any new operating system? The mystery is still thick, but there could be change in the air.

564 million. This is the number of people using MIUI each month, Xiaomi’s Android overlay, mainly intended for the Chinese brand’s smartphones and tablets. However, we learned this week that the company would have the idea of replacing MIUI with another solution.

When a certain MiOS starts to get talked about…

According to information from the leaker Digital Chat Station, often well informed, Xiaomi would indeed intend to replace the next version of MIUI with MiOS. As a reminder, the latest version of MIUI, MIUI 14, was announced in December 2022. This change of flag, if confirmed, could therefore take place in the very next months.

As reported GSMArena, things have in any case been falling into place over the past few months. Xiaomi, for example, has already registered the name MiOS, as well as the domain name mios.cn in China, and several reports mentioning the existence of a beta version of MiOS, intended for developers, have already circulated within Chinese media.

Simple overlay or real OS?

So something definitely seems to be in the works… but it is still difficult to know at this stage what MiOS precisely would be. As it stands, it could either be a “simple” Android overlay, which would then take the place of MIUI without any further pretension, or a brand new operating system designed internally by Xiaomi.

Obviously, this second hypothesis is much more ambitious. And it is not to be brushed aside. Previous rumors suggested that Xiaomi would seek to follow in Huawei’s footsteps by launching its own operating system. The latter would be mainly based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and would be intended to be installed on the brand’s smartphones, tablets and wearables… as well as on its future electric vehicles.
