Xiaomi Poco M4 Pro: swaps 5G for OLED

Xiaomi’s Poco model family is growing at the same time as the Poco X4 Pro 5G at the MWC (Mobile World Congress, February 28 to March 3, 2022). The name could cause confusion. The new Poco M4 Pro has surprisingly little to do with the Poco M4 Pro 5G. Sure, 5G is gone, but that’s not all. Those who decide quickly can get in for less than 200 euros (see below for details).

Poco M4 Pro: finally with OLED!

Xiaomi Poco M4 Pro

The OLED display has a diagonal of 6.43 inches.

The Xiaomi Poco M4 Pro is 73.9 millimeters (mm) wide, 159.9 mm long, 8.1 mm thin without the camera and weighs 180 grams. This makes it lighter and more compact than the M4 Pro 5G. This is mainly due to the smaller display. The diagonal shrinks from 6.6 to 6.43 inches. In any case, this is a reason for celebration. The M4 Pro is not only handier, it also finally offers an OLED screen that makes the LCD in the M4 Pro 5G look pale in terms of black level, contrast and viewing angles. It is under Gorilla Glass 3 and has a resolution of 2400×1080 pixels. The maximum screen change frequency is 90 Hertz, the sampling rate is 180 Hertz. Poco promises a maximum brightness of 700 candelas per square meter. That would be neat. The fingerprint sensor is on the side. Alternatively, unlock with face recognition. The mobile phone is protected against splash water according to IP53. This provides a minimum level of protection against dust and liquids. With the low certification, however, it is not considered to be really waterproof.

Poco M4 Pro: camera with three lenses

Xiaomi Poco M4 Pro

The Poco M4 Pro has three lenses on the back.

The main camera (f/1.8) has a resolution of up to 64 megapixels (MP). For standard shots, 4 pixels are combined (4-in-1 pixel binning) to create a 16 MP photo. There is also an ultra wide-angle lens (f/2.2) with 8 MP and a shooting angle of 118 degrees. In contrast to the M4 Pro 5G, which has a maximum resolution of 50 MP, the M4 Pro also has a macro camera (f/2.4) with 2 MP. The selfie camera (f/2.4) is in a circular recess in the display and has a resolution of 16 MP like in the M4 Pro 5G.

Poco M4 Pro: processor and memory

Xiaomi Poco M4 Pro

A MediaTek Helio G96 provides speed.

In the Poco M4 Pro, the MediaTek Helio G96 in combination with an ARM Mali G57 GPU ensures speed. The processor has an eight-core CPU that clocks at a maximum of 2.05 gigahertz. It also helps the Redmi Note 11S to perform better than the Redmi Note 11. The Poco M4 Pro is available with 6 gigabytes of RAM (LPDDR4X) and 128 gigabytes of device memory (UFS 2.2) or in the large configuration with 8/256 gigabytes. The memory can be expanded, the surcharge is 50 euros.

Overview of new smartphones

Poco M4 Pro: Battery

Xiaomi Poco M4 Pro

The battery can be charged with a maximum of 33 watts.

Despite the smaller dimensions, the battery still has a capacity of 5,000 mAh and can be charged with up to 33 watts via USB Type-C. A full charge should take about an hour – that’s quite fast. The required 33-watt power supply is included in the scope of delivery. There is hardly any wireless charging in this price range, unless it says Gigaset GS4 or Gigaset GS5.

Furnishing

The equipment includes dual SIM, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, stereo speakers and again a jack and an infrared transmitter. The operating system used is MIUI 13 based on Android 11.
Xiaomi Poco M4 Pro

The Xiaomi Poco M4 Pro comes in three colors.

Poco M4 Pro: (“Early Bird”) prices, colors, release

Just like the M4 Pro 5G, the Poco M4 Pro comes in the colors “Poco Yellow”, “Power Black” and “Cool Blue”. It will be available from March 2nd. With 6/128 GB it costs 229.90 euros (RRP). The large memory variant with 8/256 GB costs 279.90 euros. As is typical for Poco, there are attractive “Early Bird” offers: If you order between March 2nd and March 4th by 1 p.m., you will get the devices for 199.90 or 249.90 euros. Poco reserves the right to end the promotion early if the quotas are exhausted. Either way: The relatives Redmi Note 11 and Redmi Note 11S have competition from their own ranks.

Assessment: Poco M4 Pro

Okay, 5G is gone, but for many users that is not the dominant purchase argument because LTE is sufficient or the contract does not provide it anyway. That being said, the move from LCD to OLED is a significant and visible benefit that speaks in favor of the more compact Poco M4 Pro, which still packs a large battery.
