Xiaomi Redmi A1 vs. A2: This is how the 100 euro cell phones differ

MOBILE PHONE COMPARISON

This year, Xiaomi launched the Redmi A2, the successor to the Redmi A1. We compared the smartphones with each other so that you know the most important differences.

Xiaomi’s Redmi sub-brand is known for mid-range and entry-level smartphones, which often offer good value for money. So if you only need basic functions, the Redmi models are perfect for you.

The cheapest phones from the manufacturer include the Redmi A1 and A2, which can be bought for under 100. But what is the difference between the two versions?

screen

There is no difference in the display between the two devices. This is 6.52 inches in both smartphones and offers a resolution of 720 x 1,600 pixels. The pixel density is 269 ppi. The panel technology is based on IPS LCD, which is normal in this price range.

Performance

The processor, on the other hand, has a significant upgrade. While the A1 was still equipped with a MediaTek Helio A22, the A2 boasts a Helio G36. This has 8 instead of 4 cores and is significantly more powerful than the chipset of the predecessor.

In terms of RAM, you can choose between 2 or 3 gigabytes for both models, which should at least be sufficient for basic functions. The GPU “PowerVR GE8320” built into both is not really powerful, but should also be sufficient for the basics.

camera

On the other hand, Redmi did not allow itself to be persuaded to upgrade the camera and installed the same setup on the A2 as on the predecessor. This is a dual camera setup consisting of a main camera with 8 megapixels and a depth sensor with 0.08 megapixels. Even if the recordings of both smartphones are below average, at least HD recordings are possible. In addition, the selfie camera with 5 megapixels is not a highlight either.

battery pack

The battery is also identical in both versions of the A series with a maximum capacity of 5,000 mAh. This is probably one of the highlights of both models, since premium smartphones tend to have batteries under 5,000 mAh. With the maximum charging speed of 10 watts, you have to be patient.

Prices and Availability

In Xiaomi’s German shop, both versions are currently only available with 2 gigabytes of RAM and 32 gigabytes of storage space. For the older version, i.e. the A1, you pay 84.90 there, while you get the Redmi A2 for 99.90. You can choose between black, light green and light blue for the colors.

network world means

Of course, it’s important to remember that these phones are really only designed to use basic functions. The performance should be sufficient for using WhatsApp, Google and Co., but running more demanding apps and games can be difficult. The Redmi A2 brings some improvements, even if aspects such as the camera or the display have not been addressed. The surcharge of just under 15 Euros (~$15) is still justified and we would rather recommend the newer model, especially considering the better performance.
