Xiaomi’s electric car proves to us how much this “small” detail disrupts autonomy

Recently made official, the new Xiaomi SU7 will be offered with four different styles of rims. An aesthetic detail which is not really one, since these wheels will have a direct impact on the consumption and therefore the autonomy of the electric sedan.

Tech specialist Xiaomi recently made its first zero-emission (exhaust) car official, the SU7 sedan. And obviously, the latter, which we had the chance to discover in real life, was expected at the turn, since its ambition is to hunt directly in the lands of the Tesla Model 3 as well as the BYD Seal. And it seems to be able to keep its promises.

This newcomer announced during its revelation a range of 668 kilometers according to the Chinese CLTP cycle, thanks to its 73.6 kWh battery in its basic version. The most high-end variant can reach 800 kilometers thanks to its 101 kWh LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) pack. Very promising figures for the sedan, while its American rival peaks at 713 kilometers, thanks to its aero rims.

And precisely, what about the new SU7? Well the Chinese site It Home tells us that the latter also offers wheels designed to improve aerodynamics. In fact, the sedan leaves a choice of four types of rims, 19 to 21 inches. And they are not just there to look pretty, since they also have a direct impact on the maximum autonomy of the Chinese car. This is what the Hummer EV had already proven to us last year.

If you want to ride as long as possible, you will have to opt for the 19-inch mount, which allows you to reach 810 kilometers in a single charge, compared to 800 km as initially planned. Be careful, because this figure is understood according to the Chinese CLTC cycle, much more optimistic than our European WLTP. We must rather count on About 720 kilometers from us, which is still very good. And this is thanks to the design of the rim, but also to the tires, Michelin e-Primacy with low rolling resistance.

From singles to doubles

The latter reduce the friction of the wheel on the ground and which require spending less energy to move the car forward. Which therefore reduces electricity consumption and simply improves autonomy. It is also possible to opt for other 19-inch rims, but this time fitted with the new Bridgestone Turanza 6 tires. The range drops to 800 kilometers CLTC, or approximately 715 kilometers WLTP.

Xiaomi SU7 MaxCLTC autonomyMaximum speed
Michelin e-Primacy810km240 km/h
Bridgestone Turanza 6800 km265 km/h
Michelin Pilot Sport EV750km265 km/h
Pirelli P-Zero725km265 km/h

On the other hand, this rubber makes it possible to improve road holding and maximum speed, which goes from 240 to 265 km/h. The design of the rim is less aerodynamic and more sporty. For even more performance, it is possible to choose 20-inch wheels, fitted with tires Michelin Pilot Sport EV. However, this is once again to the detriment of the autonomy, which this time increases to 750 kilometers CLTC, or approximately 670 kilometers WLTP.

Finally, it is also possible toopt for a 21 inch mount, this time supplied by the Italian manufacturer Pirelli. These are P-Zero tires, renowned for their sportiness and excellent handling. On the other hand, we will have to deal with a sharply reduced autonomy, which then drops to 725 kilometers CLTC. Which give approximately 650 kilometers WLTPwhile the maximum speed here increases to 265 km/h.

0 to 100 km/h remains unchanged regardless of the version and is displayed at just 2.78 seconds. The Pirellis, however, improve the braking distance, but you will have to pay no less than 10,000 yuan, or approximately 1,283 euros for the latter.

Be careful, however: in addition to being larger, the Michelin Pilot Sport EV and Pirelli P-Zero tires are wider at the rear: 265 mm instead of 245 mm on other tires. It is partly this difference which increases consumption, and therefore reduces autonomy.
