The building blocks, called “Plaex Crete,” are reminiscent of concrete in color and structure, but are made of plastic that is difficult to recycle and which the company obtains from shipping and agriculture, among other things. This makes the new bricks more sustainable and also 35 percent lighter than other materials.

The special thing about the bricks is that they can be put together without any binding agent, so no mortar is needed to put the oversized interlocking blocks together. This means that they can be dismantled just as quickly as they can be put up. According to the manufacturer, structures built with Plaex Crete are still waterproof and stormproof.

Theoretically, a two-story single-family home could be built with the bricks within two weeks, writes the manufacturer. Initially, however, the building blocks will primarily be used for single-story buildings, such as warehouses. However, Plaex also sees flood protection as a possible area of application.

The stones are said to be so easy to work with that no special knowledge or bricklaying skills are required for many constructions. Robots could also do the construction work in the future. You can find more information from the manufacturer here.
