Yakuza Like A Dragon follows in the footsteps of One Piece

A particular episode in SEGA’s Yakuza series, Yakuza Like a Dragon operates a transition and stands out from the image of the heirs of Shenmue specific to this saga. Anchored with all its soul in the JRPG, the game competes in ideas and is placed in a decidedly more offbeat tone than its cousins. And his inspirations seem to have something to do with it

In an interview given to Crunchyroll on October 16, Masayoshi Yokoyama – producer of the license and now head of Ryu ga Gotoku Studio – explains that one of the influences on the game’s casting as well as its atmosphere, is none other than One Piece : “I’ve never really talked about it before, so I don’t know if I should bring it up now, but for Yakuza 7, I was really, really inspired by One Piece. For me, Ichiban is actually Luffy. And around him are Zoro, Nami and the rest of the group. I thought about the whole One Piece team so much during the writing that it had a huge influence on me..”

He even goes further by almost evoking an adaptation process: “If I remember correctly, even the hook for this episode was something like “Life is an adventure”, the key word being “adventure”. We feel the inspiration of One Piece. You know, and it’s not official at all, but in my heart, Yakuza 7 was actually my ideal version of what Yakuza: One Piece would be..” And it is indeed not complicated to find bridges, if only in the completely wacky atmosphere of the clashes in particular, or even in the types of interactions within the group of characters.
