Yamaha’s 3 new e-bikes target everyone

Yamaha has unveiled three new electric bikes positioned on various uses: one is aimed at more technical terrain, the other at gravel fans and the last is aimed at a wider audience in search of a Urban pedelec.

Yamaha’s Switch ON strategy – presented at the start of 2022 – is slowly but surely being put in place, which aims to position itself in the niche of individual electric mobility. In addition to the world of trendy bicycles, that of scooters is also part of its ambitions in this area.

In this fourth quarter of 2022, the Japanese group reveals in a more concrete way its plan of attack related to electric bicycles. Here are the Yamaha Moro 07, Yamaha Wabash RT and Yamaha Crosscore RT. Three models with different uses, respectively for off-road, gravel and urban.

Yamaha Moro 07, the most high-end of the three

Yamaha presents the Moro 07 as the most high-end of the three cycles presented. This VVTAE benefits from a Dual Twin Frame inspired by the motorcycle, but also and above all a central PW-X3 engine, whose torque is extremely generous: 85 Nm, a competitor to the Bosch Performance Line CX.

This cycle relies on agility, flexibility and power to tame “technical trails or cleared forest pathswrites the company in its press release. To do this, Zero Cadence technology has been integrated, “which instantly delivers power at the slightest pedal stroke“.

To guarantee comfort worthy of the name, the Moro 07 is equipped with a rear suspension with a travel of 150 mm, coupled with a RockShox Super Deluxe Select+ shock absorber nestled in the two upper tubes. Up front, the RockShox Lyrik Select Charger suspension fork offers 160mm of travel.

Add to that 27.5-inch Maxxis tires, a 12-speed Shimano XT drivetrain, a 500 Wh battery (no theoretical autonomy announced), Magura MT5 hydraulic disc brakes, a weight of 23.8 kg (size M ) or Bluetooth connectivity. Three sizes are on the menu, available in two colors: Icon Blue and Raven/Silver.

Yamaha Wabash RT, for gravel fans

A gravel bike is halfway between a road bike and an all-terrain bike. It is exactly to this category of two-wheelers that the Yamaha Wabash RT belongs, which also benefits from Zero Cadence technology but from a slightly less torquey engine: 70 Nm are available on the PW-ST, also positioned central way.

Yamaha says a tilt sensor has been specially installed so that extra power is transmitted on hills or in headwinds. Since a gravel is meant to ride on mountain roads, that makes perfect sense.

On the comfort side, you have to rely on a suspended seatpost (40 mm of travel), but no suspension at the front or rear. There is also talk of a 500 Wh battery (no theoretical autonomy announced) and an LCD screen capable of displaying a whole lot of information (speed, battery, assistance mode, counter, odometer).

Yamaha does not specify what type of brake the Wabash RT relies on, although a hydraulic disc brake system is likely included. In terms of weight, this cycle weighs 21.4 kg in size M (three sizes in total). Only one color will be available in the catalogue: Blue Steel.

Yamaha Crosscore RS: an urban e-bike for everyone

The Yamaha Crosscore RS widens the user target: this urban electric bike is intended for everyone, for everyday journeys, or even for a few short outings on the beaten track. PW-ST central motor, 70 Nm torque, Zero Cadence technology, 500 Wh battery: again, on paper, the promise looks good.

Weighing 23.9 kg all the same – a nice baby for a city bike, therefore –, the Crosscore RS benefits from “Yamaha’s Display A interface that provides essential information in large format“Says the brand, which remains discreet about the type of brakes chosen – even if again, hydraulic disc brakes seem to be in order.

According to the photo, no stock mudguards are on the program: this is somewhat disappointing for a bike intended for the city. Available in three sizes, the Yamaha Crosscore RS will be available in Shiver White and Urban Sage colors.

Price and release date

When will Yamaha’s three e-bikes be released? The company indicates availability in France in the first quarter of 2023, i.e. between January and March of the next vintage. The prices will also be communicated later, although we can expect high prices in view of their technical data sheet.

In our opinion, the Yamaha Crosscore RS should not be snapped up below 2000 euros, if not 2500 euros. Otherwise, it would be a great surprise and a more than relevant proposal from Yamaha.
