YB wins against St. Gallen thanks to Stergious own goal

The St. Gallen are well on their way to scoring in Wankdorf. But they go home with a 1:2 defeat. YB thus consolidates its lead in the Super League.

Once again, the Young Boys are on top in a home game against FC St. Gallen.

In the middle of the second half it has long been a battle of attrition, intense and rapid, but also flawed and wild. The favorite YB does not manage to get control of the game against the uncomfortable FC St. Gallen, the 1: 1 also lasts a quarter of an hour before the end of the game.

In this phase, the Young Boys allow a surprising number of good shooting opportunities for St. Gallen. The attentive Bernese goalie David von Ballmoos defuses some dangerous situations with skill and anticipation. And then it’s YB, which can add again in the final phase. First Meschack Elia fails in the 85th minute on the crossbar, shortly afterwards St. Gallen Leonidas Stergiou scores an own goal. Like last time in Lucerne, the Young Boys scored the late 2-1 winning goal.

St. Gallen more than 30 games without a win in Wankdorf

In recent years, a rivalry with several spectacular encounters and emotional stories has developed between YB and FC St. Gallen. The Young Boys in the new Wankdorf are now unbeaten in 32 duels against this opponent.

On Saturday evening, less than a quarter of an hour was completed when YB made it 1-0 after a fine combination across the entire artificial turf pitch – in the end Jean-Pierre Nsame stole the goal from his teammate Christian Fassnacht because he tipped the ball over the line.

The Young Boys have put together a team with remarkable power, class and squad breadth – against St. Gallen, for example, Elia, Fabian Lustenberger, Sandro Lauper, Vincent Sierro, Kevin Rüegg and Kastriot Imeri are not in the starting line-up. The attacks of the title favorite and leader often lack accuracy, and Fabian Rieder, who has been very convincing for months, is unusually jittery against St. Gallen.

Rieder made a mistake before Akolo made it 1-1

And so, after the 1-0 win for YB, Rieder also initiates the equalization shortly before the break – with a ball loss deep in his own half. Chadrac Akolo profits and equalizes with a skillful lob. The guests reward themselves for a courageous appearance; as always, they immediately seek the offensive when the opportunity presents itself. They don’t always proceed with precision, either, but at a steady pace and unpredictably.

St. Gallen's Chadrac Akolo scores the goal to make it 1-1 in the top game in Bern.

On the defensive, St. Gallen has to do without the suspended central defenders Matej Maglica and Basil Stillhart, which is not particularly noticeable thanks to a solid performance. In the hectic final phase, however, the guests lose track and thus the entertaining game.
