Year Zero on M6: “My character is overwhelmed by his emotions and that’s what I liked”, says Emilie Dequenne

Tuesday January 10, M6 broadcasts the end of its mini-series “Year Zero”. Emilie Dequenne, who plays Juliette, one of the main characters, comes back with us on this project which she considered “daring” and tells her experience on the set…

This Tuesday, January 10, 2023 from 9:10 p.m., M6 invites its viewers to discover the continuation and end of its Year Zero event mini-series. Here, the public follows the incredible destiny of three characters who go back in time without any explanation!

Propelled 365 days back, the trio faces immense personal challenges because in the past year, their respective lives have completely changed… Will they keep the past intact or will they make sure to turn the story to their advantage? One thing is in any case certain, several individuals around them are in danger.

In the cast of Year Zero, we find Claire Keim (who answered our questions), Marc Riso, Marc Ruchmann, Eric Caravaca and Emilie Dequenne. For AlloCiné, the latter returned to her experience within this ambitious project.

AlloCiné: Why did you participate in “Year Zero”?

Emilie Dequenne: First, for the writing because the construction of the story is ultra-new. I had never had the opportunity to read such a daring project here in France and for television. I liked what happens to the main characters and what they decide to do.

Despite everything, I admit that I also hesitated because I had already experienced working conditions for a mini-series format and we had not been able to achieve all our ambitions, for lack of means. So I had this fear here but Olivier Barma (the director, editor’s note) convinced me.

We hooked up a lot when we met and I trusted him. The casting wasn’t completely finished when I read the script, but I was already really enjoying working with Claire.

Tell us about your role…

Juliette is a funny character… At first, I wanted to shake her up: why doesn’t she go with Anna and Cédric right away? And at the same time, when I was preparing Year Zero, I realized that she was playing so big… And she hits him very quickly.

She understands that all this horrible year that she has lived through, with the death of her husband and her debts, has raised monstrous personal stakes. So I understood his withdrawal at first glance. Afterwards she changes her mind and goes to help them, fortunately…

Juliette is very raw, cash. She has an impulsive temper. Here, she is overwhelmed by her emotions and that’s what I liked.

How would you have reacted in your character’s place?

I think I would have done exactly like Juliette. In any case, in this context, with the imminent death of the husband etc, I would have done like her. And if I had remembered a winning lottery draw, I would have tried it too!

Did the fantastic aspect of the series contribute to your choice to join the project?

Sure ! I like the idea that our starting point is impossible, unreal, invented… This elevator/time-travelling vessel really appealed to me. The plot remains very focused on the human and the personal but there is a dynamic with a suspense that is there all the time.

I was just afraid for the logic of the story. But seeing the show, apart from a thing or two where I thought we should have developed this or that more or less, the whole thing is going very well. There are no inconsistencies.

How did your collaboration with your partners go?

I didn’t know Claire personally but I had seen her before, of course. I really think she’s a great actress and it’s crazy that we only see her on TV. I do not understand why the cinema does not call it. It was a very nice meeting. With the boys I didn’t really know, we all formed a great group.

Do you prefer to shoot in the series format or the film format?

Everything pleases me. My profession is an actress and as long as there is a story and a character that take me on board, I go there. I’m not in a process of just making movies. TV channels and platforms are part of the cultural composition today and if you don’t go there, you may be missing out on beautiful things.

The end of “Year Zero” is rather open. Would you stack up again in the event of season 2?

If I like it as much as what I read the first time, of course! Especially with this fine team.
