Trouble behind the scenes at “Yellowstone” led to the cancellation of the popular western series. After leading actor Kevin Costner left the project, he now apparently wants to come back.
The road to the final episodes of “Yellowstone” is long and confusing. We know that the series will end with the remaining episodes of season 5 and there will be no shortage of “Yellowstone” spin-offs. We also know that the series ends mainly because Kevin Costner initially wanted to appear less often in “Yellowstone” in order to make his “Horizon” films.
When that wasn’t possible, it became increasingly clear that Costner would no longer be seen in season 5.2, after he had been the center of attention as usual in the first half of season 5. A long break was the episode in which series creator Taylor Sheridan had to come up with a round ending for the story that would work without Costner’s John Dutton.
Filming for the new episodes will begin soon and will be broadcast from the end of 2024. Now the situation is complicated by another twist: Kevin Costner wants to return as John Dutton!
Costner’s return causes new problems
According to Puck, Costner is hoping to at least make a guest appearance in the final episode of “Yellowstone.” Since Costner has now finished his “Horizon” films, there is actually nothing to speak against his return – apart from Taylor Sheridan’s plans.
After all, Sheridan has already written the scripts for the second half of season 5, which will be significantly longer than previously expected. Now the question is whether he would be willing to rewrite one or even several of the scripts. If we assume that Sheridan wrote John Dutton out of history through a fatal accident, it would be difficult to make any changes in the short term.
At the same time, it would of course be more credible if John Dutton’s death – should it come to that – could also be shown. Here again the question arises as to whether Kevin Costner would really return only for his character to die straight away.
The drama behind the scenes of “Yellowstone” is inscrutable and what the grand finale of the series will look like can apparently only be said at the end of 2024, when the last “Yellowstone” episodes find their way to Sony AXN and later also to Paramount +.
