“Yellowstone” fans were shocked when the Paramount hit series was canceled after 5 seasons. Behind the scenes, however, this development was brewing for a long time, since Kevin Costner was hardly interested in the series anymore. So instead of just continuing “Yellowstone” without Costner, the series has ended and the story is expected to continue in the upcoming spin-off starring Matthew McConaughey.

Of course, this is wonderful news for Costner, at the latest after the remaining 6 episodes from “Yellowstone” season 5, which still have to be shot, his time as John Dutton is over. But why did Costner want to leave the series and what are his plans for the future?

Kevin Costner’s dream project

Anyone who thinks that Kevin Costner just longs for rest and relaxation after years on the “Yellowstone” set knows Costner badly. The 68-year-old wants to work as a director again 20 years after the western “Open Range” and his dream project sounds like a considerable undertaking.

The modern epic “Horizon” tells of the American frontier movement. The story covers 15 years and introduces 170 characters, which is why “Horizon” will initially consist of four almost three-hour films. Costner later wants to re-edit “Horizon” in order to be able to publish his Western dream project as a series.

While “Yellowstone” was created and shaped by Taylor Sheridan, Costner seems to long for a project where he can take control and let his creativity run free.

Now the only question is whether the four “Horizon” films will be released as a TV or stream event or will actually be released in cinemas. With “Dances With Wolves” Costner already has a three-hour western success to show for itself, but films by and with Costner often fell short of expectations. It remains to be seen whether “Yellowstone” could change anything about that.
