Yemen: Airstrike on a prison in Saada, several dead witnesses


SAADA, Jan 21 (Reuters) – An airstrike hit a prison in Yemen’s northern province of Sa’ada on Friday, killing several people including African migrants, a witness told Reuters, as the government-led coalition Saudi Arabia is stepping up its operations against areas controlled by Houthi rebels.

Rescuers continued at midday to extricate victims from the rubble after the attack, which occurred at dawn, but the number of dead has not yet been specified from official sources.

According to Houthi-controlled Yemeni TV channel Al Masirah, dozens of people were killed and injured in the attack. The channel also showed images of injured people at al-Jamhuri hospital in Saada.

The Saudi-led coalition has stepped up its airstrikes on Houthi military targets, after the Iran-backed Shia movement carried out an unprecedented assault on the alliance member country United Arab Emirates on Monday. missiles and sent drones against Saudi cities.
