Youtuber JerryRigEverything gave the all-new Motorola Razr 40 Ultra a hard time… until he discovered a surprising flaw in the design of the device.
Its hinge is surprisingly resistant to dirt, sand and debris, and its main screen is generally less fragile than expected, but after the abuse inflicted by Zack Nelson, alias JerryRigEverything, the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra finally revealed a flaw that we had not seen coming. Its small rear screen covers a gaping hole, and therefore reacts very badly to pressure. A simple attempt to fold in the opposite direction to that intended is therefore enough to literally burst the 3.6-inch external AMOLED panel installed on the back of the new one. flagship from Motorola.
This situation will probably not occur in the context of normal use of the device. But this weak point shows that if manufacturers of folding smartphones have greatly improved the design of their products, they remain much more fragile than “classic” mobiles. And in the case of the Motorola Razr, a badly placed shock could quickly get the better of the integrity of its secondary screen… to the point of literally reducing it to pieces.
A device also very sensitive to scratches…
In his video, the YouTuber specializing in smartphone torture, also shows that the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra is very vulnerable to scratches, especially on its 6.9-inch main screen. Covered with a protective film that must not be removed, the latter is indeed scratched from level 2 of the Mohs hardness scale. At level 3, deeper and very visible scratches appear, suggesting that this panel is likely to be easily scratched, even in typical use.

As mentioned above, on the other hand, the device resists rather well to prolonged exposure to soil and sand. Despite an IP52 “only” rating, Zack Nelson notes that there was no significant creaking that could be indicative of internal damage in the device, even after putting a lot of sand in the hinge.
Note, however, that under similar test conditions, by the same videographer, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 enjoyed superior durability and remained functional despite the mistreatment inflicted. It remains to be seen whether Samsung will manage to improve its design even further with the Galaxy Z Flip 5, which should be announced in the coming days during the Unpacked event on July 26.
