Angry protests against Bolsonaro
They accuse their president of genocide: tens of thousands of people take to the streets in several Brazilian cities to protest against the pandemic policy. Prime Minister Bolsonaro pursues a “deceptive policy”.
In protest against Jair Bolsonaro’s corona crisis management, tens of thousands of people again took to the streets against the right-wing extremist head of state in Brazil. “Bolsonaro genocide” and “Yes to vaccinations” could be read on the demonstrators’ banners in the metropolis of São Paulo.
“More than 500,000 people have already been murdered by this government,” said the doctor Patricia de Lima Mendes demonstrating in Rio de Janeiro, referring to the approximately 522,000 corona deaths in Brazil. This is the result of a “deceptive policy” full of “lies”.
It was the third mass protests against Bolsonaro since the end of May. Thousands of people in other cities, including the capital Brasília as well as Belém, Recife and Porto Alegre, followed the opposition’s call to protest, as can be seen in pictures from the Brazilian media. Bolsonaro is accused of massively worsening the corona pandemic by repeatedly downplaying the dangers of the virus and questioning the usefulness of corona vaccinations.
The massive criticism of the president from the preliminary investigations initiated on Friday into his role in a suspected corruption case is being re-fueled. Bolsonaro is said to have been informed about a “gigantic corruption system” in the Ministry of Health, according to the complaint by three senators, but did not take any action against it. It is about corruption in connection with a contract for the corona vaccine Covaxin, which is manufactured in India, worth the equivalent of around 250 million euros. The next presidential election in Brazil is due to take place next year.
