Healthy Lifestyle: You are what you eat

Show me your fridge and i’ll tell you who you are? What may sound like a superficial phrase contains more truth than many might believe.

Don’t worry, this isn’t one of those posts aimed at encouraging people to get chocolates, cakes, and chips off the menu forever. I’ll be honest: I also love the sweet treats and small snacks in between too much. Nevertheless, nutrition is a central point in our health. Even more: Studies show that nutrition influences our health even before exercise and even genetics. For me, “You are what you eat” means a lifestyle in which intuition plays a central role.

“You are what you eat” – this is the philosophy behind it

The phrase was coined by the German philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach as early as the 19th century. Today, 200 years later, science and research agree that diet does indeed have an impact on our genetic make-up. And not only that: Food also affects our hormones, including our feelings and emotions.

Do you know that feeling of fullness when there was french fries for lunch, maybe a schnitzel and finally a dessert? The body reacts immediately to the food that is heavy in the stomach. Often there is a certain consequence: You feel sluggish, limp and would like to take a nap. For me, that’s the key scene I think of when the phrase “you are what you eat” comes to mind. Because I myself can tell very quickly whether food is good for me or not. If I eat fast food and the like for weeks, my mood and my performance decrease.

Listen to your body – Happy Food = Happy Me

For me personally, the quote from the German philosopher has nothing to do with ideals of beauty. It’s about intuition, which foods are good for me at certain moments. And if it is the dark chocolate that accompanies me during my period, then believe me: At that very moment, chocolate is a “happy food” for me.

5 foods that will boost your mental health

I do not relate this sentence to genetics, unlike research that has already confirmed its accuracy. For me, it’s about my inner well-being. If I start the day with an orange juice, a warm porridge with nuts, cinnamon and apples, my body signals to me how important these vitamins and fiber are.

In addition to personal feelings, there are actually foods that are considered “happy food” and can influence the mood.

These foods will put you in a good mood

  • linseed: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids and lignans (secondary phytochemicals that have a similar effect to the hormone estrogen), flax seeds are a real power food. They have a digestive effect, can increase mood and at the same time increase mental performance.
  • Dark chocolate: If chocolate contains at least 70 percent cocoa, the delicious candy is an absolute mood lifter. Chocolate also contains magnesium, potassium and iron.
  • Apricots: The sweet fruits increase the feeling of happiness thanks to a high proportion of the amino acid tryptophan. This is converted by the body into the neurotransmitter and serotonin, which have a decisive influence on our mood.
  • Bananas: Due to the high vitamin B6 content, bananas are ideal for counteracting tiredness and exhaustion.
  • Dates: The ideal snack for the evening. Due to the number of vitamins, trace elements and minerals, dates can ensure a better sleep. The proportion of tryptophan has a positive effect on emotions and feelings of happiness.
