LG, the well-known brand specializing in displays, today proudly presents the first stretchable high-resolution display.

Currently in research and development, it’s a 12-inch screen that can be twisted and stretched to a size of 14 inches.

LG stretches out compared to the competition

Flexible displays are slowly but surely starting to become more popular, like on the Samsung Galaxy Fold. Lenovo has also been interested in an extendable screen concept. But LG intends to go even further, with what the brand calls “free-form displays”. They can be stretched and twisted at will. The material used to achieve this result is inspired by the silicone used for contact lenses.

The screen is illuminated by micro-LEDs with a dimension of less than 40 micrometers which promise on paper a display in full color RGB high resolution up to 100 PPI and great durability. Finally, the circuits feature a form of spring in order to be as flexible as the material they incorporate.

An expandable search

In research and development since 2020 all the same, this free-form display developed by LG should begin to be marketed by 2024.

The brand intends to apply this technology in scenarios as numerous as they are varied. ” Easily attachable to curved surfaces such as skin, clothing, furniture, land and air vehicles, this unique innovation expands the potential of displays in various industries such as fashion, wearables, mobility and gaming “says LG in its press release, cited in source below.

We could thus see in the next few years labels replaced by these stretchable displays, among other applications. An idea that until then was science fiction. But it will take a priori wait until 2024 to see if LG’s investment in this stretched-out research will truly pay off or not.
