La Poste was allegedly the victim of a cyberattack at the start of the week, and the profile of the attackers is surprising at first glance.

Article update, May 31 at 9:30 a.m. :

The company tells us that ” the additional investigations carried out by La Poste point to a temporary technical incident which led to the unavailability of its LaPoste.fr website on Monday May 29 between 11:12 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. “.

Cyberattacks can affect very different targets, ranging from the National Assembly or local authorities to private companies, including hospitals. A very wide range in which we can also now include La Poste, if we are to believe our colleagues from Numerama.

Made in Bangladesh

This Monday, May 29, around noon, the La Poste website experienced for nearly two hours what was described as a “ technical incident “. Because of the latter, it was impossible to perform different tasks like tracking a package or even forwarding mail. A rather unsurprising situation, apart from the origin of this problem.

Indeed, according to the media Numerama, it would be a team of hackers from Bangladesh who launched this attack. The information was confirmed by the Twitter account listing threats and fraudulent online actors FalconFeedsio. A name has even been given: “Mysterious Team Bangladesh”.

Denial of service, again!

This attack was without major consequences and was quite classic, since it was (once again) a denial of service attack. As a reminder, the so-called DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack aims, by multiplying the connections to a site, and therefore by mobilizing significant traffic, to flood the site or service attacked to make it unavailable. This kind of attack is more and more frequent on the Web.

As regards the case of La Poste, as observed by our colleagues from BFM TV and Parisianthe outage, located around 11:30 a.m. by DownDetector, was repaired at 1:30 p.m. For the moment, no information has been given on the potential reasons for such an attack, coming from a country located nearly 10,000 kilometers from France.
