fot many people these days their sleep ends with a cell phone signal – smartphones have largely replaced traditional alarm clocks. Actually, this simplifies a lot. If we wish, then apps control our waking up process and automatically search for the smoothest transition from sleep to wakefulness. When we travel, our little electronic helper takes care of the changeover to a new time zone. A wonderful world of progress were it not for our human imperfections. We are quickly succumbing to the new temptations that digital services bring with them.

Curious and trained to be in constant contact with the digital device, we often don’t just press stop. We risk a quick look at the display. A filtered or unfiltered flood of information interrupts the magic of growing up, for example, as just described, we often miss this short but so important phase between sleeping and being awake, in which we are extraordinarily sensitive. Negative news in particular hits us in this state with often unexpected force. Immediately the mind starts to work, get angry or scared – and instead of a peaceful start to the day, we are already stressed. Sometimes the day is “already over” before it really begins. Just why?
