The 20% of households still liable for housing tax on their main residence will benefit, in 2022, from a further reduction of 65%. Like the 30% granted in 2021, it will benefit all households concerned, regardless of their income level.

It is only from 2023 that the housing tax on the main residence must have definitively disappeared. But owners of a second home will continue to pay for it.

If you are paid monthly, you have the option of adapting the amount of your monthly withdrawals for 2022 so that they incorporate this future reduction and thus avoid having an overpayment which will only be refunded to you in the fall. 2022. But beware: for this modification to be effective from January 2022, you must do so before December 15th. Otherwise, your request will not be taken into account until the following month.

You can do this online on the tax administration website, from your private area, under “Payment”, then “Manage my direct debit contracts”. Or directly from the online tax payment service, also accessible from your personal space.

The process in detail

You will have to choose the housing tax deduction contract relating to your main residence then click on “Modify your deductions”. You will then have to indicate the estimated amount of tax (i.e. the amount of your 2021 housing tax, from which you subtract 65%), and add to this amount the contribution to public broadcasting ( 138 euros or 88 euros for the overseas departments). If you do not feel comfortable enough to do this online yourself, you can ask the tax authorities to do it for you, either by sending them a message from your secure messaging on Impots.gouv .fr, by checking the box “I have a problem with the payment of my taxes / my payments are dematerialized”, either by telephone on 0 809 401 401 (free service + cost of the call).

As a reminder, you also have until December 15 (or until December 20 if you pay online) for the payment of the housing tax relating to your second home (some main residences are also affected by this deadline) and for the tax on vacant housing.
