“You made things rise in me”, Vianney on the verge of tears during this performance

An Unexpected Journey. This Saturday March 2, 2024, TF1 broadcast the fourth part of blind auditions from the thirteenth seasonThe Voice. And if last week viewers were marked by Lilian, a young 18-year-old man who seemed straight out of another time, this weekend, it’s Gilles, aka Mewhy, which disconcerted the jury. Indeed, this bubbly Brussels resident working as a cook in a school canteen surprised everyone with his world.

During his portrait, Mewhy set the scene by revealing a little of his world and his way of finding his musical inspiration : “It’s a lot of travel, a lot of questions, a lot of research. I made several trips around the world and I slept a lot in people’s homes, I went to sleep in forests very early on to try to find myself in lost places.”Naturally, someone who loves composing in the middle of nature, around a campfire, decided to try his luck atThe Voiceby choosing a song on the theme of a change of scenery : “Holidays by the sea” by Michel Jonasz.

“I had a great moment”

“We went to the seaside, with my father, my sister, my mother. And when the waves were calm, we spent the day on the islands.” Mewhy captivated the coaches with this hymn to childhood and carefreeness. “It looks nice”said Vianney after a few seconds of listening, his hand in front of his mouth and somewhat masking the emotion rising within him. At the end of his performance, the Belgian candidate declared that he had made this musical choice thinking of his “Grandmother”. A dedication which did not fail to move the public and the jury. “ You offer us a still journey, an imaginary journey”, greeted Zazie.

Sensing the imminent danger, Mika decided to block Vianney. “Can I tell you something very important? I absolutely want you on my team. It’s not that I want you, it’s that I need you on my team”, said the interpreter of “Relax” to Mewhy after his bad turn. Disappointed with his fate, Vianney still insisted on thank the candidate for making him feel such emotions:“You brought up things in me from childhood. This song is my parents and us on vacation by the sea. It was the simple joy of the year for which they bled their whole lives. It’s their life project.” And to conclude, full of gratitude: “I held on for the whole song, but I wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart. In these moments, when you bring back childhood and the sacrifice of parents, it is the greatest gift in the world. The Voice or not The Voice, I don’t care, I had a great time.”

Discreet about his private life, Vianney has however mentioned a few times his childhood and his parents. His father, who was a helicopter pilot, and his mother, who was an airplane pilot before becoming a school teacher then a professor of economics and management, therefore left their mark on the 33-year-old singer and at the same time passed on to him the taste for work and that for freedom.

In an interview given toPsychologies Magazinein 2021, the husband of cellist Catherine Robert returned with admiration to those who gave him life: “I have a lot of admiration for them: they are diverse, they have touched everything, done all the jobs in the world.”Parents who therefore also gave him the desire to stand out since a young age : “Colleges are forbidden from following fashions, doing like others, and wearing designer clothes! As a result, of the four brothers, none resembles the other. […] This is where I get my taste for freedom.”
