You will soon be able to pay with Bitcoin at this airport

Maiquetia Airport in Venezuela accepts bitcoin payments to advance in new economic and technological systems. There are other examples of this.

Venezuela is undoubtedly one of those countries in Central and South America that are eagerly watching the Bitcoin development in El Salvador. It fits into the picture that a major international airport in Venezuela is reportedly preparing to accept cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) as a means of payment for tickets and other services. Simón Bolívar International Airport is working on such a solution to meet local industry standards. This reports the regional news agency El Siglo. The also as Maiquetia famous airport is located in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela.

Meanwhile, the airport’s director, Freddy Borges, plans to accept multiple cryptocurrencies. These include Bitcoin, Dash and Venezuela’s oil-linked digital currency Petro. However, despite several government offensives, its spread among the population is rather marginal. Venezuela is suffering from having large oil reserves, but not being able to get a grip on the enormously high inflation. The news comes at a time when Venezuela is experimenting with central bank digital currency (CBDC). The country’s central bank launched the Venezuelan digital bolivar on October 1st.

Venezuela wants to move closer to international standards

Borges said the airport’s administration will introduce new payment options in coordination with Venezuela’s National Regulatory Authority for Cryptocurrencies and related activities. The introduction of crypto payments at the airport Maiquetia is a sign of the company’s commitment to move closer to international standards and promote the introduction of digital currencies, said Borges. According to the executive director, the crypto payment option would benefit foreign tourists, including those from Russia.

The airport Maiquetia meanwhile, is not the first to offer this option. Several airports and airlines around the world have explored ways to adopt crypto payments and blockchain-based features in recent years. On the one hand, you want to offer better options for payments. On the other hand, there is an opportunity for them to improve various customer verification services. This also includes, for example, the COVID-19 test results. Started in March the Latvian airline airBaltic, Ether (ETH) and Dogecoin (DOGE) as means of payment for tickets after it introduced crypto payments in 2014.

In El Salvador there were some teething problems, but the Chivo wallet is now enjoying increasing popularity. President Bukele is now even considering launching a state-sponsored Bitcoin mining project that uses renewable energies is operated.
