In the battle following her divorce against her husband at the time, journalist Phil Bronstein, she explains that in 2008 she lost custody of her adopted son, then 8 years old, because of his role in the sulphurous Basic Instinct erotic thriller. An incarnation that would have played against him in the eyes of the judge responsible for deciding the dispute.
According to the actress, her nude scenes in the film were used against her in the divorce proceedings. “I lost custody of my child when the judge asked him, ‘Do you know that your mom acts in erotic films?’ We decided what kind of parent I was based on my decision to do this movie” says Stone.
Following her divorce in 2004, she asked for sole custody of her son, adopted in 2000. After a long legal tussle, the judges considered that her ex-spouse could “offer him a more stable environment”. A decision that “broken my heart” adding that she had also been hospitalized for heart palpitations.
“Now people walk around showing their penises on Netflix, but back then what we were doing was very new” she comments on Paul Verhoeven’s film, emphasizing the innovative nature of his work in 1992, featuring “nudity, sex and homosexuality”.
