Good news: if you’re on Android, you’ll soon be able to ditch your aging webcam in favor of… your smartphone!

As very often, when it comes to Android, the new discovery of the day comes to us from Mishaal Rahman. And this should greatly delight those who have made a habit of turning their smartphone into a webcam for their computer.

Continuity: when the iPhone replaces your webcam

If you have a good memory (and we have no doubt about it), you remember then that Apple has already announced a feature allowing you to use your iPhone as a webcam. This one, called “Continuity”, is a roundabout way of compensating for the often questionable quality of webcams built into Macs. Since the Apple ecosystem is often limited to its devices, this functionality is also (regrettably) restricted to Macs. What to give ideas to Google? Maybe…

If, until now, it was essential to go through a third-party application to make your Android smartphone a real webcam, Google will soon make it easier for you.

After Apple, Google wants to turn your smartphone into a webcam

Nowadays, more and more people prefer to replace their old webcam with their brand new smartphone. A “trend” that occurred in particular during the emergence of the COVID-19 crisis. In order to meet this growing need, Google will soon integrate a new function called “DeviceAsWebcam” into its operating system. As its name suggests, this will allow owners of Android smartphones to use their device as a USB webcam. An idea that we welcome with open arms, especially if it opens up to more devices.

Android being a much more open ecosystem, we can easily imagine a greater number of possibilities. Unfortunately, we don’t have any information about the potential rollout of this feature. If the firm could well reserve it for the launch of Android 14, nothing affirms, at the time of writing, which the DeviceAsWebcam function (which is undoubtedly a provisional name) will be launched on this occasion.
