“You’re lame”, “you’re ugly”: Burger King’s initiative against harassment is controversial

It is an original advertising campaign, which is controversial on social networks. In a series of notifications sent to people with its application in France, the American giant Burger King insulted its customers. Objective: to make them aware of the particularly violent daily life of children who are victims of school bullying.

you suck», «You’re ugly», «you’re useless“: these messages, sent to the smartphones of Whopper aficionados, may have surprised the recipients. “You have just experienced what thousands of bullied children experience every day.“, then explained the brand, in a notification sent a few minutes later, calling on its customers to support the association Les Papillons, which fights against child abuse, including at school. The company wanted toeducate parentsto these questions, as part of the day against school bullying, which was held this Thursday.

This initiative, however, has generated many reactions on social networks. While some have welcomed it, others have widely criticized it. “Burger King’s publicity stunt is catastrophic. A great team like that, no one thought it was a shitty idea to send messages like that to former victims of harassment? To people who are not emotionally stable?“, thus annoyed a user, on Twitter. “How much do you think they got into it, at Burger King, to decide to shoot down the mental health of their most fragile customers?!“added another.

For its part, the brand has stuck to its guns. “It is unacceptable. You really have to have a good reason to do this.“, she replied ironically to a user who questioned her on Twitter, highlighting the cause defended.
