France 2 broadcasts Wednesday evening at 10:55 p.m. “The children of the century, they will never be the same again” co-directed by Anaïs Feuillette and Grérad Miller. The couple are interested in what the Covid-19 has done to young people, developing the idea that the pandemic has impacted them much more than what their elders wanted to believe.

INTERVIEW

“It’s hard to be 20 in 2020”. In October 2020, the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron addressed his support to young people, deprived of outings, social life and sometimes vital odd jobs, because of the spread of Covid-19 and the health restrictions decided to curb it. Since then, the suffering of the younger generation in the face of the pandemic seems underestimated. This is in any case the thesis defended by Anaïs Feuillette and Gérard Miller in the documentary The children of the century, they will never be the same again, broadcast Wednesday evening at 10:55 p.m. on France 2.

“The risk is that this pandemic produces young people of a completely different type”

The psychoanalyst Gérard Miller explains at the microphone of Europe 1 why he wanted to co-direct this film. “I made this documentary with Anaïs Feuillette because we both realized that the adults had totally underestimated what had happened to the young people. By dint of thinking that they had life in front of them, we underestimated the fact that they had suffered, I will not say more than adults, but in any case as much, “he believes. “And that the idea that they had their whole life ahead of them was a crazy idea: you never have your whole life ahead of you, even when you are 20 years old, and especially when you are deprived of this which is essential to youth.”

With the end of social interactions, face-to-face classes, parties or trips, the young people in the documentary recount all that they lost during this period and that they will no longer find, or at least no longer at the same age. “The risk is that this pandemic produces young people of a completely different type: young people who may pass from childhood to adulthood, without knowing this moment of transition”, analyzes Gérard Miller. “For years, they had already been certain that they would not have an easy job. And now they are deprived of all these little pleasures. I think that gives birth to a different kind of youth.”

The documentary The children of the century, they will never be the same again is to be seen Wednesday evening at 10:55 p.m. on France 2.
