YouTube Vanced: why Google is removing the popular application

YouTube Vanced developers have announced the end of development of the app and download links. A decision generated by the actions of Google.

YouTube Vanced: Why Google is removing the popular app

It’s hard to be surprised by this change in the situation for YouTube Vanced. We learn from the site The Verge that the application will be deleted in the coming days. Available on the app’s official website so far, the download links will disappear in the next few days and the development will stop.

Google threatens and the developers comply

The developers of Vanced explain that Google simply sent a formal notice to them to remove all references to the YouTube service, through the description texts or even the logo. The project will simply stop, although the latest version of the application should continue to work for the time being.

Advanced has been discontinued. In the coming days, the download links on the website will be taken down. We know this is not something you wanted to hear but it’s something we need to do. Thank you all for supporting us over the years.

For the moment, it is the download links of the application that will be removed. The dedicated Discord server, as well as the Telegram and Reddit groups should be maintained.

Stop escaping ads

So why is Google removing this app? As we said, hard to be surprised. YouTube Vanced is an application that offers to “improve” the experience offered by Google. It does this with objectively interesting functions such as the dark theme for AMOLED screen, touch controls allowing you to adjust the brightness and volume as on MX Player and VLC, or even more sophisticated parameters to adjust the definition and the codec used for the videos.

It’s not really that which bothers Google, but rather the ad blocker integrated. Indeed, with YouTube Vanced, there is no need to pay a YouTube Premium subscription to escape the advertisements that remunerate the service, and a little content creators. YouTube Vanced integrates SponsorBlock, which goes so far as to automatically skip certain passages of a video when the channel thanks its subscribers or presents a sponsor brand.

These functions are not hidden, Vanced puts them in the spotlight even on its official website, on several occasions. So we can’t be surprised to see Google asking for the removal of such an application, even if it is popular and convenient to use.

Other applications should follow

Vanced is one of the most well-known and popular applications to offer this kind of function, but it is not the only one. SmartTubeNext (STN) offers the same kind of functions on TV products such as Android TV, the Nvidia Shield or Amazon Fire TV. For its part, uYouPlus targets users of the Apple ecosystem with an application for iPhone and iPad. It wouldn’t be surprising to see them soon also announce an end of support if Google contacts them.
