YouTube is about to launch a new gesture to activate accelerated playback in just one click. Until now, you had to dig a little deeper into the video settings.
Do you like playing YouTube videos in fast motion? It will not have escaped you that this functionality, although practical in certain cases, is not necessarily the easiest to access. To go from classic playback to x2 speed with the mobile interface, you have to click on the video settings (top right of the screen), then go to the “Playback speed” tab to choose the speed that suits you best. However, YouTube would like you to avoid these manipulations, and allow you to double the playback speed in one click.
To do this, the platform (which should soon increase the price of its Premium subscription) is currently testing a novelty that allows you to switch to x2 speed with a simple click on the video being played.

Once this action is completed, YouTube will display a message at the top of the screen: Play at x2 speed » giving you confirmation that the order has been taken into account. As SamMobile points out, there is a difference depending on the interface used. On the YouTube web interface, the video will pause when you release your mouse or trackpad. Conversely, on Android and iOS, the video will continue to play when you lift your finger.
Note that only users subscribed to YouTube Premium can currently benefit from this new function, which will be tested by YouTube until August 13. Affected users must also go to the YouTube Labs page to activate it.
This function could subsequently be adopted on a large scale, but nothing currently allows us to be certain. It’s not uncommon for YouTube to drop (temporarily, or permanently) new features after their testing period.
