ZD Tech: Why the second-hand market is exploding online

Hello everyone and welcome to ZD Tech, ZDNet’s daily editorial podcast. My name is Clarisse Treilles and today I will explain to you why the second-hand market is exploding online.

Which ? Yes, who has never bought or sold on Vinted, Leboncoin or eBay? Well, fewer and fewer people. This is what emerges from the latest study by Fevad, the federation of e-commerce and distance selling.

The study affirms on the one hand that e-commerce reaches nearly 14% of retail trade in France. But in this very dynamic market, one category of products particularly stands out: second-hand goods.

In fact, Vinted and Leboncoin have burst into the top 5 of the most visited e-commerce platforms in France. And they are familiar with the most established players in the world of French e-commerce. Judge instead. Vinted, which offers second-hand clothes, claims 17 million followers in France per month. The Fnac site attracts 19 million monthly visitors.

More than a fashion effect, it is therefore a real trend that is emerging. And it seems set to stay, since the rise of e-commerce has particularly accelerated since the start of the Covid-19 crisis in 2020.

50% of online shoppers have bought second-hand goods online

Results ? Nearly half of French online shoppers have already cracked for second-hand online.

But then, what motivates online buyers to turn away from the new? The reasons are mainly economic. Why buy more expensive a product which we know that second-hand it will remain very qualitative? Still, that’s not all. Internet users mainly buy a price. Clearly, the trigger for buying second-hand is a price significantly lower than the price of new.

And the eco-responsible dimension also plays a role, it seems.

But there are also significant obstacles to the development of the second-hand market. The fear of being scammed, or the absence of guarantee on certain products are mentioned by the refractory.

Nevertheless, the second-hand market now attracts far more than pure players. The Boulanger brand has just taken over the company Recommerce, which specializes in refurbished devices.
