Zelda remake: "Link's Awakening"
Nintendo presents the cutest retro pearl

From Michael Bauer

Retro is in: Nintendo likes to ride this track, but always invests a lot of time and effort in properly polishing up the new look of the classic games. "Zelda: Link's Awakening" is no exception. The new edition of the Gameboy classic is a wonderfully sweet game attempt.

After Super Mario, Link is the greatest hero in the Nintendo universe. With the title "Zelda: Breath of the Wild" the Japanese developers landed a huge success in 2017 and pushed the sales of the new console Switch. Now the remake of the Gameboy classic "Zelda: Link's Awakening" is getting a new coat of paint for the Switch that will delight fans of the classic – and fascinate a new audience.

The Gameboy game from 1993 is the mother of all adventure games for handheld gamers and groundbreaking for the numerous successor titles related to Link and Princess Zelda. The lovingly drawn story has an even more emotional effect on the Switch and is kept very close to the original – it quickly transports lovers of the classic back to childhood.

From the wonderfully pimped-up top-down perspective, it is important to bring the shipwrecked Link home on the island of Cocolint. The windfish watches over the island and sleeps in a huge egg over the island. Only those who play the ballad of the windfish with the help of eight instruments can wake them from their sleep and leave the island.

Of course, Link has to collect the instruments first. The pointy-eared hero hits it through forests, deserts and water worlds. There he has to solve puzzles in dungeons and defeat intermediate and later final bosses. Those who do not know the game will need their time to find the solutions.

The game becomes more challenging with every instrument you have won. If the first object of desire can still be conquered with sword and shield, new auxiliary items are added with each subsequent chapter of the story, which must be combined in the dungeons. Spring, power bracelet, grappling hook – these are just some of the instruments that are used.

Unusual freedom of movement

While on the Gameboy with its two buttons the key assignment had to be laboriously changed each time depending on the aid, the Switch offers significantly more scope with its additional buttons. Link's Awakening benefits from this and plays even smoother. In addition, unlike the Gameboy, the analog stick allows unusual freedom of movement.

New to the Switch version is that the player can now build dungeons and labyrinths himself. The fun is limited, however, because the construction options are not particularly creative.

This in no way diminishes the fun of the game. "Zelda: Link's Awakening" is the ideal entertainment for on the go. The always exciting adventure offers hours of fun in a dreamlike atmosphere.
