KYIV (Reuters) – Ukrainian authorities have discovered two new mass graves containing hundreds of corpses in Izium, a town in northeastern Ukraine recaptured this month from the Russian army, Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky said in a statement. interview broadcast Sunday evening by CBS.

Russia did not react immediately to these accusations. She regularly denies committing atrocities or targeting civilians in her “special military operation” in Ukraine.

“Today I received new information (…) They discovered two new mass graves, large graves with hundreds of people (…) We are talking about the small town of Izioum”, said said Volodimir Zelensky.

“The sanctions must continue. These sanctions will have a political impact, as well as a financial impact,” he added, referring to Western sanctions against Russia.

After the recapture of the city, occupied for months by Russian troops, the Ukrainian authorities have already discovered hundreds of graves in Izium, in a wooded area near a cemetery.

They ended last week exhuming the corpses of 436 people there. A majority of them appear to have died violently and early signs suggest that 30 of them were tortured, the regional governor said.

The bodies of 17 soldiers were also discovered in a mass grave at this site.
