Zen 4: AMD advances +13% in IPC and up to +29% in performance compared to Zen 3

Of course, this 13% gain on Zen 3 is an average of the gains seen with many games and tools. To evaluate it, AMD mentions tests carried out on known software by comparing Zen 4 and Zen 3 with a number of cores /threads identical (8/16) and a frequency of 4 GHz.

The Ryzen 9 5950X far behind

Even more directly, AMD presented the results obtained by the new spearhead of its processor range, the Ryzen 9 7950X. It was logically compared to the Ryzen 9 5950X and, one suspects, came out of the exercise brilliantly. On Borderlands 3the gain was limited to +6%, but went up to +35% on Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

In gaming, the Ryzen 5 7600X outperforms the Core i9-12900K

In reality, we understand quite quickly why AMD did not want to compare its spearhead with the Core i9-12900K in video games: it preferred to leave this “fight” to the Ryzen 5 7600X. Yes, the smallest of the Ryzen 7000 range is compared to the beefier Alder Lake.

A comparison that remains to be completed, AMD presenting the results of only five titles. That said, the Ryzen 5 7600X is only beaten by the Core i9-12900K on one: Grand Theft Auto V, a game in which the Intel CPU wins by a maximum of 3%. On Cyberpunk 2077AMD evokes a perfect equality between the two processors.

On the other hand, whether it is Middle Earth: Shadow of Warfrom the very recent F1 2022 or of Rainbox Six: Siege, the Ryzen 5 7600X wins. This ranges from a fair victory (up to +2%) in the case of Middle Earth: Shadow of War to much more substantial differences on the other two with, respectively, +12% and +17%.

AMD brings its results in video games closer to the scores single thread of its Zen 4 processors, Mark Papermaster stressing that the video game is still very dependent on this kind of results. Much better energy efficiency

Last but not least, AMD has brought progress on the performance side closer to improving the efficiency of its chips, whether compared to the Ryzen 5000 or Intel’s Alder Lake.

Thus, while on V-Raythe Ryzen 9 7950X achieves up to 57% better performance than the Core i9-12900K, it is also about 47% better in performance per watt, in other words for a consumption of one watt, we record results 47% higher.

Then anticipating the questions that we could ask ourselves in relation to the increase in the TDP of its processors, AMD explains that the most notable performance gains are obtained on the lowest TDP: at 65 Watts, we gain up to at 74% performance against “only” up to 37% in 105 Watts and up to 35% in 170 Watts.

AMD presented things differently by evaluating consumption at equal performance and performance at equivalent consumption, all on average on the Ryzen 5000 and Ryzen 7000. The results are unequivocal: 62% less consumption at equal performance and 49 % more performance for the same consumption.
