Of the processors Zen 4 with a graphics solution as powerful as it is modern? This could give AMD a nice advantage.
At Clubic, we have a soft spot for AMD APUs. You know, those chips for which the American company combines the best of both worlds: its CPU and GPU microarchitectures.
RX Vega in the closet
On its latest APU versions, AMD has significantly increased the CPU part with support for the various Zen developments. Thus, while the 2200G and 2400G were satisfied with Zen “just short”, we were able to take advantage of Zen+ on the 3200G and 3400G.
Better still, the release of the Ryzen PRO 4000 series in July 2020 marked a clear leap forward with the use of Zen 2 cores. Finally, a year later – in August 2021 to be exact – the Ryzen 5000G marked a new step with the integration of Zen 3 cores.
Alas, each time, the graphics part has not known such an evolution and even if details could change from one generation to another, it was always a question of using the RX Vega architecture while the graphics cards of AMD integrated RDNA then RDNA 2.
Zen 4 + RDNA 3: dynamite?
A kind of “stall” has therefore taken place over the years and it seems that AMD has finally become aware of the thing. For the moment, of course, it is only a question of noises from the corridor, but they have piqued our curiosity.
Tom’s Hardware effectively explains that the next two generations of APU should mark a significant evolution. The Dragon Range range is announced for a TDP of 55 Watts while the Phoenix range will have to stick to values between 35 and 45 Watts.
In both cases, it is assumed that AMD will exploit Zen 4 cores for the CPU part with support for DDR5 and PCIe 5.0. Where things get interesting is that the rumor talks about the use of RDNA 3 for the graphics part of the two APUs, Dragon Range and Phoenix.
Information that may surprise insofar as the RDNA 3 graphics cards will only be available in a fortnight. At Clubic, we hope that the thing will be quickly confirmed… perhaps during CES 2023 in Las Vegas which is due to start in early January?
