Zero-knowledge proofs to transform Bitcoin? ZeroSync arrives

Zk-proofs to improve Bitcoin – The scalability of Bitcoin has always been a topic of debate within the crypto community. However, the recent arrival of rollups and zk proofs may well be a game changer. Thus, the project ZeroSync aims to improve the scalability of Bitcoin using zero-knowledge proofs (zk-proof).

Improve node synchronization with ZeroSync

ZeroSync is a project that emerged from the work of three German engineers. The latter take advantage of zk-proofs, which make it possible to prove the validity of information without revealing the information itself.

Faced with the significant development of this technology on Ethereumin particular through the rollupsengineers have decided to port the idea to Bitcoin.

As a result, ZeroSync has already produced a working prototype that allows users to validate Bitcoin blockchain transaction status and history without downloading the entire chain or trust a third party.

However, we are still far from a finished product. Indeed, it can verify consensus rules, but cannot currently verify transaction signatures. This one also needs to undergo some optimizations and tweaks to improve its speed and security.

Despite everything, this could make it possible to democratize the use of full node Bitcoin by drastically reducing synchronization time. As Robin Linus, co-founder of ZeroSync, explained to our colleagues at Coindesk:

“We are still at the prototype stage. But the grand vision is that you download one megabyte of evidence and it’s like you downloaded 500 gigabytes. »

In practice, ZeroSync enables the generation of STARK proofs of the Bitcoin blockchain. Obviously, who says STARK evidence says StarkWare. Indeed, the developers resorted to Cairothe StarkNet language for implementing the various rules.

L2, DeFi: zk-proofs towards Bitcoin scalability?

Unlike the majority of blockchains to date, Bitcoin has not, or little, been a carrier of the DeFi movement. A situation that has recently changed with the arrival of Ordinals on Bitcoin.

However, the arrival of zk-proofs could well change the situation. Indeed, the use of zk-proofs goes beyond the simple synchronization of nodes. Once operational, they can be used for a wide range of applications, such as creation of a second layer solution on Bitcoin.

Before that, the project still requires significant development. So, ZeroSync developers are currently working on implementing zk-proofs for validating block headers and transactions.

At the beginning of March, the project Rollkit has also undertaken to push zk-proofs on Bitcoin. This notably allows the creation of a sovereign rollup on Bitcoin.
