Despite the declarations of Tim Cook, who clearly said that he did not believe in the metaverse, Mark Zuckerberg criticized the way Apple developed its virtual universe.
Reiterating his remarks, which he had transmitted to his employees in an internal memo, the boss of Meta explained during a conference that his company was engaged in a philosophical struggle against Apple. He thus defended his vision of the metaverse, which he wishes to develop in partnership with many external players, on the contrary, according to him, Apple.
Apple and Meta, opposing philosophies, according to Zuckerberg
Apple’s still-unannounced metaverse will, according to Zuckerberg, be completely different fromHorizon Worlds, in which the legs have just made their appearance, after two years of development. The creator of Facebook thus explains that the difference between the two virtual universes is fundamental. The apple brand develops its own internally and in secret, when Meta consults many interlocutors and works in collaboration with many other companies, and even States. Apple’s philosophy, still according to him, will give a result that will be much less good for consumers, because it will result in a closed ecosystem completely controlled by its creators, unlike Horizon Worlds.
For Zuckerberg, these two philosophies (open and collaborative vs. closed and internal) have manifested themselves in every generation of computers, and he largely defends his view. One of his arguments, however, seems empirical. He argues that the development of new generation VR headsets by Apple could affect the entire virtual reality market. The company has, it is true, the habit of jealously reserving its products for the programs and uses that it controls. But to be perfectly honest, the creator of Facebook could also have reminded that Meta does not always do things differently. Horizon Worlds is currently reserved for owners of Meta Quests helmets only.
Is Mark Zuckerberg fighting against a windmill?
In an interview given recently to a Dutch media, the CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, had clearly expressed his point of view. For him, the metaverse is not the future of the Internet, and his company does not invest specifically in this direction. The very real projects of virtual or augmented reality helmets that it develops are therefore not intended for this use.
But this argument has little chance of convincing Zuckerberg, for whom this culture of secrecy is Apple’s trademark. This vision, moreover, has the advantage of being impossible to deny definitively.
