  • The rhinoceros bull certainly had no intention of killing, according to the Zurich Zoo.

This is certainly not how the visitors to Zurich Zoo had imagined their excursion today. As the zoo writes in a message, there was a tragic incident in the Lewa savannah on December 24th, which ended fatally for a zebra. The white rhinoceros bull Kimba injured the zebra Sjarlie so badly in the stomach that it died on the spot. Exactly how the two-ton bull injured the zebra and what led to his death is being investigated.

The incident took place on the winter plaza of the savannah, which was visible to the spectators. “This is a very unfortunate and unpleasant incident,” says zoo director Severin Dressen. Zoo staff cordoned off the area after the event.

No consequences for rhino

In the Lewa Savanne, which opened in 2020, different animal species live together in the same facility. These include giraffes, zebras and antelopes, but also rhinos and ostriches. There are always territorial fights among the animals, as well as in nature, emphasizes Dressen. “With all precautions there is always a certain residual risk. Such an unfortunate collision as today is the exception, »continues Dressen. It is quite possible that the zebra stallion irritated the bull, writes the “Tages-Anzeiger”. Kimba is otherwise rather cautious, according to Dressen.

To portray the rhinoceros bull as the culprit would be wrong, says the zoo director. “He probably just wanted to push the zebra aside and caught it unluckily,” explains Dressen. There are no consequences for Kimba. “Kimba acted according to his natural instincts and certainly had no intention of killing,” he ends the statement.
