1-0 defeat in 1/4 1st leg – Bayern Munich fall into reserve in Villarreal – Sport

Bayern Munich is surprisingly in reserve in the Champions League after the quarter-final first leg. Coach Julian Nagelsmann’s team had more of a share of the game against Villarreal, but in the end they were still well served with the narrow defeat.

The only and ultimately decisive goal in the Estadio de la Ceramica came in the 8th minute. Arnaut Danjuma deflected an assist from Daniel Parejo into the net after a straightforward attack to make it 1-0 for the hosts.

Offensively harmless Munich

There was no immediate reaction from Munich, who had scored no fewer than 30 goals in the current campaign. The German record champions kept the ball mostly in their own ranks, but expressed their effort with the surprisingly high pressing Spaniards. Geronimo Rulli in the Villarreal goal didn’t need to intervene once in the first 45 minutes.

On the other side, the ball wriggled in the net a second time before the break whistle. The supposed 2-0 from Francis Coquelin, who outwitted Manuel Neuer with an actually unsuccessful cross, didn’t count because of a narrow offside position.

Moreno forgives twice

Although Bayern Munich noticeably increased the pressure after the break, the better chances in the second half went to the YB and Juventus conqueror.

Gerard Moreno alone had two attempts to make it 2-0: the striker hit the post on the first try and failed to accept a gift from Manuel Neuer on the second attempt. The Bayern keeper made a pass at the center line (!) directly into his feet, but the direct shot from his own half of the field just missed the goal.
