FC Sion loses the Challenge League top battle in Thun 0-1, it is the 3rd defeat in the 4th game against Thun.
FC Thun can keep the race for direct promotion to the Super League exciting. The Bernese Oberland won 1-0 at home against the leader FC Sion. The Valaisians are now only one point ahead of FC Thun, which in turn can no longer be pushed out of second place.
This top battle was decided by just one goal. Thun’s homegrown Daniel Dos Santos scored it after playing cat and mouse with the Sion defense in the 30th minute. Sion goalie Timothy Fayulu ultimately had no chance when Dos Santos’ shot from his ankle.
Dominant guests
This victory in the top battle is still flattering for FC Thun, because Dos Santos’ goal was the hosts’ only shot at Fayulu’s goal. The Sion team only had two shots at the Thun goal, but they also had one or two other top chances. Dos Santos’ goal came during a dominant Sitten phase. Shortly before, Théo Bouchlarhem had slashed the ball from a promising position (24th) and a minute later Mateo Matic saved in a 1-on-1 with Dejan Sorgic.
In the second half, Mauro Lustrinelli’s team withdrew more and more and waited for a counterattack. Although FC Sion had more possession of the ball and various shots, they were only able to pose a threat to Matic’s goal very rarely. On the other hand, Marc Gutbub missed the home team’s best counterattack (89′) somewhat hastily.
Open promotion race
Thun remains FC Sion’s feared opponent, scoring 10 out of a possible 12 points against coach Didier Tholot’s team this season. Next Saturday, FC Thun will be visiting Nyon and could get within one point of Sion with a win. They, in turn, will contest the cup semi-final against FC Lugano on Saturday evening in their home tourbillon (8:30 p.m., live on SRF two).
